How to Style Wall Murals | Interior Design Tips for Every Space

Wall murals shape us more than we often realise. The spaces we live in influence how we think, how we feel, and how we move through our everyday lives. A room can feel calm or energising, intimate or expansive. Sometimes without us quite knowing why. So what is it that truly defines the atmosphere of a space?

One of the most powerful tools in shaping that feeling is wall murals. They have the ability to transform a room from the ground up, adding depth, character, and a sense of intention before anything else is even in place.

But with so many directions to take, how do you choose with confidence? To guide you through the process, we turn to interior designer Nina Takesh, who shares her expert perspective on how to approach wall murals with clarity and conviction. From defining the feeling you want to create to making decisions that truly bring a room to life.

Let the Wall Murals Lead the Room

According to interior designer Nina Takesh, the key to working with wall murals is surprisingly simple. Commit. One of the most common mistakes, she explains, is hesitation.  Trying to soften or neutralise a strong pattern out of fear it will overwhelm the space. While that can sometimes work, more often the result is the opposite. A room that feels flat because the choice was too cautious. Instead, she encourages choosing the design that genuinely excites you and allowing it to lead. When you do, everything else in the room tends to fall naturally into place.

Choose the Right Wall Mural for Each Space

She points out that the designs in her second wall mural collection Eastern Blush with belarteSTUDIO are strong enough to carry an entire room, which is why she always recommends going all in rather than treating them as accents. Soirée Persane and L’Air des Jardins, for instance, are ideal for bedrooms or dining rooms, to create an immediate emotional impact. Tropique, with its expansive palms, comes into its own in living rooms or hallways with enough height to let the pattern unfold at full scale.

For spaces that call for a more subtle atmosphere, Ombre de Sable offers depth without an obvious pattern, while Pierre et Bois and Damier lend themselves to studies, libraries, or any room where the mood should feel thoughtful yet understated. And when it comes to the powder room, Nina is clear. This is the one place where you can fully embrace a bold design without it ever feeling like too much.

Choosing wall murals is often seen as a purely aesthetic decision. A matter of pattern, color, and style. But in reality, it’s something much deeper. Before making a final choice, there are a few key considerations that can make all the difference

Visualise the Pattern at Full Scale

One of the most important steps is to visualise the pattern at full scale. Look closely at how it repeats and consider how much of the motif will actually be visible across your wall. A large botanical design, for example, needs enough space to establish its rhythm, while a geometric pattern can feel entirely different in a narrow hallway compared to a wide dining room. Understanding this early on helps avoid surprises later.

Design with Confidence, Not Hesitation

It’s also worth remembering that a wall mural is not a temporary gesture. Furniture can be rearranged, and paint can be changed over a weekend. But the right wall mural, chosen carefully and installed with confidence, defines the character of a room in a far more lasting way. That permanence is not something to fear, but something to approach with care. Not anxiety. There’s a difference. When decisions are driven by hesitation, the result is often safe but uninspiring. When they are made with clarity and conviction, the space feels complete.

Start with the Feeling, Not the Room

Instead of asking “what works in a bedroom or a hallway?”, ask yourself “how do I want to feel when I walk into this space?” Do you want a sense of calm, something soft and meditative? Or are you drawn to a more expressive, dramatic atmosphere?

Wall murals are one of the most powerful ways to shape that feeling. It sets the tone from the very beginning. Before furniture, lighting, or finishing details come into play. When you begin with a clear emotional direction, every other decision, from pattern and scale to color and styling, becomes more intuitive and cohesive.

See It in Your Space Before You Decide

We also recommend ordering a physical sample before making your final decision. View it in the actual space, at different times of day. Colors can shift more than expected. A warm tone on screen may appear cooler or flatter in natural light. Taking the time to see it in context makes all the difference.

In the end, the spaces that feel truly resolved, the ones that make you pause when you enter are almost always shaped by one strong decision. Carried through with intention, and supported by everything around it.
