There is a moment in printmaking that never stops fascinating Sonia Dubois: the instant the matrix lifts from the paper and the image reveals itself for the very first time. A moment of anticipation, of surprise, of something that can never quite be predicted. It's this openness to process, to letting the material lead, that has defined her practice from the start.
It is this fascination with the unexpected that runs through her new collection for belarteSTUDIO. A collection born from the richness of the forest, the elegance of animal forms, and a deep respect for the hand behind every line.
An Artist Between Two Worlds
Sonia Dubois is a French-Polish visual artist, born in Neuilly-sur-Seine. Trained as an architect, she gravitated toward illustration and artisanal printmaking after completing her engineering studies. A background that still shows in the quiet structure and geometry underlying even her most organic compositions. Working primarily with paper, she builds layered, embossed reliefs that give her illustrations a sculptural, tactile presence.
Her work is, above all, an homage to nature. To the forests, clearings and quiet inhabitants of Poland, a landscape she returns to again and again. As animal lover, Dubois brings the same tenderness to her depictions of foxes, deer and birds that she brings to the causes she champions outside the studio.
Her visual language draws from many sources at once: the flowing ornamentation of Art Nouveau, the quiet precision of botanical illustration, and the curious charm of antique cabinets of curiosities. Her interiors of choice are eclectic, rich in handmade details, art, unexpected furniture, and natural materials. It is this sensibility that shaped every design in the collection, each one built from ink, pencil and the carved surface of a linocut block.
Craft as a Starting Point
Every motif in the collection begins the same way: as an original hand-drawn illustration. From there, Sonia developed each design through experimental printmaking techniques inspired by traditional lino printing. Pressing the roller, applying ink by hand, sometimes leaving it out altogether and letting the image emerge on its own terms.
"There are so many ways to transfer an illustration onto another material, and exploring them constantly inspires me," she says. "Combining drawing with different techniques always leads to something unexpected. And I love discovering where that process takes me."
Developed in close collaboration with belarteSTUDIO, the series translates this experimental, handcrafted approach into large-scale wall murals for contemporary interiors. Compositions that move fluidly between abstraction and figuration, where geometric structure softens into atmospheric, wooded landscape.
Four Designs, One Story
Art Fleuri
Flowers, leaves, feathers and delicate mushroom forms unfurl across the wall in a composition that feels almost like a pressed botanical archive brought to life. Every fragment was first sketched by hand before being reworked through Sonia's experimental printmaking process, layering ink and texture until each petal and stem carried its own quiet imperfection. The design draws its rhythm from Art Nouveau, an era defined by nature rendered as ornament, where flowing lines transformed the organic into the decorative. Here, that spirit is reimagined for the contemporary home. The result is intricate without feeling busy, romantic without feeling sentimental. A wall mural that rewards a second and third glance as new details emerge.
Romantic and Brutalist
At first glance, this design seems to hold two opposing worlds at once. Soft botanical silhouettes, curved and organic, sit layered against the stark, angular language of Brutalist architecture. It is a dialogue between tenderness and structure, ornament and form. Each shape began as a hand-painted illustration, later developed using techniques borrowed from traditional linocut printing, so that even the boldest geometric forms retain a certain warmth and irregularity. The layered composition invites the eye to move between hard edges and soft curves, creating a mural that feels both architectural and deeply artistic. Striking in a minimalist space, and equally at home as a counterpoint in a more maximalist room.
Lino Printed Fauna
Inspired by antique cabinets of curiosities and the quiet wildlife of Scandinavian forests, this design turns a wall into a small, curated world. Foxes slip between branches, birds perch mid-flight, deer stand half-hidden among leaves and botanical fragments. Each creature was first drawn as an original illustration, then developed through techniques rooted in traditional lino printing. The slightly irregular linework, visible texture and small imperfections are intentional, they are what give each animal its presence and warmth. This is a design built for storytelling, for interiors that welcome curiosity and conversation. It suits nurseries and hallways as easily as a study lined with books, bringing a sense of playful discovery to any room it inhabits.
Running Greyhound
There is a hush to this design, a sense of walking into a landscape rather than simply looking at one. Elegant greyhounds move through a wooded scene rendered entirely in soft pencil, evoking the antique scenic wallpapers once found in grand European interiors. Warm sand tones and fine, sketch-like lines give the mural a hand-drawn intimacy, as though each tree and figure were captured in a single unhurried sitting. Subtle tonal variations and small imperfections in the linework keep the piece feeling like an original drawing rather than a repeating pattern. It is quiet, elegant, and unmistakably crafted. A design suited to spaces that ask for calm, from a formal dining room to a serene, contemplative bedroom.
