Two iconic homes embody this spirit to perfection: Carl and Karin Larsson’s home, Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn, Sweden, and Charleston Farmhouse in East Sussex, the rural haven of artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. These are not just homes, they are complete works of art. In both, the everyday merges with the imaginative. Painted furniture, hand-stitched textiles, and vibrant wall murals turn practical objects into poetry.
Color plays a vital role in shaping the atmosphere of these spaces. At Lilla Hyttnäs, the palette is one of subdued clarity. In Our Garden, evokes the exuberant, life-filled spirit of Charleston Farmhouse’s gardens. Towering hollyhocks and sunflowers stretch skyward in a scene that feels almost lifted from Alice in Wonderland. The richness of detail, from varied petals and layered leaves to small garden creatures, draws the eye again and again. At the base, a border of geometric motifs grounds the composition, while above the blooms, a dreamy summer sky with fluffy clouds and butterflies lifts it into the poetic.
