Can you tell us a little about yourself? What does home mean to you?
I'm a 30-something woman who moved to Gothenburg and the west coast of Sweden twelve years ago. I originally come from a small town on the east coast, but today I call the west coast my home.
To me, home is the most important place in the world. I'm someone who recharges best in solitude or within the comfort of my own space, which is why it's so essential that I truly feel at home where I live.
The number one thing I value in a home is coziness. I never want my space to feel overly styled or impersonal. Instead, I love surrounding myself with meaningful details, soft textiles, fresh flowers, plants, and scent. Scent is incredibly important to me, almost to an absurd degree! Haha. If my home doesn't smell good, it affects my entire mood. A good scent can instantly shift the energy and make everything feel just right.
You live in an apartment from 1913 – what do you love most about your home?
What I love most is the sense of soul and history in the space. I’ve always been drawn to turn-of-the-century architecture, but I don’t think that’s the only style that holds beauty. There can be just as much character and charm in a 1970s house, for example. That said, the layout of this apartment is truly special. I love the classic "enfilade" floor plan, where rooms connect in a row and allow for long, open sightlines, even though we live in an apartment, it feels spacious and airy. And most of all, I love that we’ve made it our own.
What do you love about wall murals?
The cozy, wrapped-in feel it brings to a room! There’s something about wall murals that adds depth, softness, and personality in a way that paint simply can’t match. I also love how wall murals can simplify furnishing decisions. It becomes the star of the room, which means you don’t always need to add a lot more for the space to feel complete.
Do you have a favorite room or spot in your home? What makes it special?
Right now, our kitchen is my absolute favorite space! I really enjoy cooking and baking, so I naturally spend a lot of time there, and I love it. I've dreamed of having a kitchen island for as long as I can remember, and now I get to cook at one every day! There’s something so lovely about facing out into the room while chopping vegetables or preparing food, instead of standing with your back turned. And we recently built a beautiful glass cabinet that I’m completely in love with. It adds so much charm to the space.
How do you approach decorating a rental apartment?
I believe a rental is just as much a home as any owned apartment or house. The main difference is that you have to be more creative and work with what’s already there, rather than tearing things out or changing the layout. In a way, that mindset can be refreshing. I actually think many homes would benefit from us using what we have more thoughtfully, instead of always feeling the need to replace or renovate just because we can.
How has your style evolved over time? Are you someone who’s constantly rearranging, or do you stick to a consistent look?
I don’t actually rearrange furniture very often, but I do love switching up the small details! Lamps, pots, flowers, and candle holders are constantly being moved around as I feel the need for a little change.
For me, change is essential to feel at ease in my space. I don’t need major overhauls. Sometimes all it takes is a new plant, a fresh tablecloth, or a bouquet of flowers to breathe new life into a room.
Style-wise, I’ve always leaned toward a Scandinavian aesthetic, mixing old and new. But over time, I’ve started embracing more color and pattern, a direction that continues to grow and evolve for me.
