Every belarteSTUDIO wall mural is printed to order, in exactly the size you enter. That makes measuring the most important step. This guide covers every type of wall – and ceilings – so your mural fits perfectly the first time.
Always add 20 cm (6 inches) to the width and 10 cm (3 inches) to the height. Walls are rarely perfectly straight, and the extra margin is trimmed away during installation. Measure twice before you order.
Before you measure

- Use a tape measure and write every measurement down.
- Move furniture away from the wall so nothing gets in the way.
- Measure the full wall – windows, doors, sockets and switches are cut out during installation.
- Take a photo of the wall. It helps if you need to ask us for advice.
Walls
Standard walls
Measure the full width and the full height of the wall. Add 20 cm (6 inches) to the width and 10 cm (3 inches) to the height.
Sloped walls
Measure the full width, and the height at the wall's highest point. The mural is delivered as a rectangle and the sloped part is trimmed away during installation. Add 20 cm (6 inches) to the width and 10 cm (3 inches) to the height.
Walls with several slopes
Ignore the slopes and measure the wall at its widest and highest point. The mural is produced as one rectangle or square, and the sloped parts are cut away during installation. Add 20 cm (6 inches) to the width and 10 cm (3 inches) to the height.
Walls with windows, doors or other obstacles
Measure the wall's longest section for both width and height, as if the window or door was not there. The openings are cut out during installation. Add 20 cm (6 inches) to the width and 10 cm (3 inches) to the height.
Multiple walls
Measure the full width and height of the whole area. Obstacles are removed during installation. Add 20 cm (6 inches) to the width and 10 cm (3 inches) to the height.
Walls around stairs
Measure the width of each wall separately and add them together. For the height, measure from the lowest floor to the highest point of the ceiling. Add 20 cm (6 inches) to the total width and 10 cm (3 inches) to the height. You do not need to order a separate mural for each wall.
Stairwells often have several connected walls, so we ask for a little more information to place the pattern seamlessly:
- Take photos of every wall, from several angles, so nothing is missed.
- Number the walls – Wall 1, Wall 2, Wall 3 – clockwise around the space, so it is clear how they connect.
- Measure obstacles. Note the width and height of every window and door, and the distance to the nearest ceiling, wall and floor.
- Make a sketch with the width and height of every wall, the total height of the stairs (from the very bottom floor to the ceiling) and all openings.

Wall murals inside mouldings
Measure the width and height of each panel inside the mouldings, and note where the pattern should continue from one panel to the next. Sockets and switches are included in the measurements and cut out during installation. Add 20 cm (6 inches) to the width and 10 cm (3 inches) to the height.
Wall murals above wall panels
Measure the full width of the wall, and the height from the top of the panels to the ceiling. Add 20 cm (6 inches) to the width and 10 cm (3 inches) to the height.
Ceilings
How to measure a ceiling
Empty the room first, so you can measure from one end to the other without obstacles. Measure the length and width of the ceiling and add 5–10 cm (3 inches) to both.
Enter the longest side as the height and the shortest side as the width. The pattern follows the height. Example: a ceiling that is 400 × 250 cm should be entered as height 400 cm and width 250 cm. If you swap them, the pattern runs along the short side instead – and you get more seams.
